Baluchistan is the biggest province of Pakistan by virtue of area and natural resources. The strategic location of Gwadar has added more to the importance of the province. The province has remained a center of international conspiracies since cold war era. Former USSR sowed the seed of sub-nationalism in Baluchistan in 1970. It was to punish Pakistan for support of US in pushing back the Russians from Afghanistan. The arrival of extra-regional forces in Afghanistan has further aggravated the situation. The plan to develop Gawadar port has attracted rivalries of many new actors. At present, the province can be rightly declared the hub of conspiracies against the state of Pakistan. One such conspiracy is sub-nationalist divisions among people of Baluchistan.
Before becoming part of Pakistan in 1948, Baluchistan has seen multiple nations ruling it through history. Traces go back to a Hindu Raja Siwa, Mughals, Mirwanis, Baloch, Rinds and Raisanis. They all have ruled Baloch lands before Brahvis. Afghan Pathans and Brahvis kept fighting each other until Ahmad Shah Abdali normalized relations with Nasir Khan of Kalat in the 1750s. Relations between these two ethnicities kept witnessing ups and downs even after that but generally remained peaceful. This is all history now.
Baluchistan has gained renewed importance after the start of Chinese economic project the CPEC. Conspiracies are unfolding now at a faster pace. Unfortunately, neighboring Afghanistan is once again the house of separatist elements aiming at destabilizing Balochistan. Most of the misled Baloch insurgents are taking refuge in Abdul Raziq Achakzai governed Province of Kandahar. Raziq is Pashtun but he is arming and supporting misled Baloch insurgents against his own tribe for money. Some other quarters are also trying to unite misled anti-Pakistan elements of Baloch and Pushtun to coerce Pakistan. However, all major ethnic groups of Balochistan know the realities of these conspirators.
The Pushtun population inside Pakistan is much more in number than anywhere in the world. In fact, Karachi is the largest Pushtun populated city in the world. People of FATA are also eagerly waiting to formerly join mainstream Pushtun in the development race for Pakistan. Pushtuns are sincerely thriving in business, services, and industries as well as in agriculture to cement Pakistan’s road to prosperity. This is the reason Pushtun ethnic and sub-nationalist politics is squeezing in Pakistan. Similarly, Balochs are also ready to reap the fruits of development.
In Sep 2017, PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi inaugurated 363 km long Kachi Kanal in Baluchistan that will bring 72,000 acres of barren Dera Bugti land under irrigation. Establishment of 29 Universities in the province, provision of natural gas to each district headquarter of Baluchistan, development of new roads and transport network and more water projects for irrigation with an overall cost of over six hundred billion are only a few projects in line. Baloch and Pushtun are both ready to take Balochistan and Pakistan forward on the path of prosperity. All major ethnic groups of Balochistan, Baloch, Pashtun, Hazara and Punjabi settlers appreciate the need for unity and peace for economic progress.
People raising fake voices on behest of others are unable to understand new dynamics and realities of Balochistan. Law and order situation in Baluchistan is rapidly improving. Hidden hands behind the unrest have been unearthed in shape of Kulbushan Yadav backed terrorism. Baloch, as well as the Pushtun, now understand that efforts to undermine Baluchistan are in fact efforts to undermine them all, the Baloch and Pushtoon. Provincial and Federal Governments have also changed the course and understand the sensitivities of people in the much better way now. The arrival of Nawab Gazen Marri back to Pakistan needs to be viewed in this context. Over 500 Baloch field fighters along with their commanders have willingly handed over their weapons to Government and joined the peace-drive.
Another important aspect deviating Baloch and Pushtun away from Baloch activism is the unethical and anti-cultural activities of their so-called representatives in the name of Balochistan. Pushtuns are allergic to the anti-Islamic stance of Tariq Fateh and Naila Qadri’s whereas Balochs dislike Banuk Karima. These elements sow the seeds of inter-religious hatred, sectarianism, and also support causes like that of gay and lesbian rights [highly unpopular in Pakistan]. Balochs are not in two minds about the intentions of insurgent leaders living and enjoying abroad. Their only worry is how far this “leadership” will keep enjoying in Switzerland and UK and keep their homeland Baluchistan in flames of terrorism and insurgency.
Fake supporters of Balochs and Pashtuns may carry out hundreds of demonstrations and sponsored conferences in the entire world, People of Baluchistan show no interest in their activities. In fact, each such activity abroad helps unite local Baloch and Pushtun population within Pakistan. Activities abroad are aimed at defaming Pakistan but patriotic displays in Baluchistan represent genuine feelings of Balochs as well of Pashtuns who stand united with Pakistan.
The elite in Islamabad neglected Balochistan for a very long time. Instead of improving governance, Pakistani elite bought the loyalties of Sardars/chieftains and totally forgot common people of Balochistan. But now every tier of society and institutions of the country is viewing unrest in Balochistan very seriously. Pakistan Govt is ready to invest in a big way, Pak Army is establishing Cadet Colleges in many remote areas. Fauji Foundation is planning to establish many new hospitals and major Defence Housing Scheme in Balochistan is also on the card. “Der Ayad Drust Ayad.”
Pakistanis are awake now. Balochistan would soon become the most prosperous province of the country.
