The Real Face of Altaf Hussain By Muhammad Maheer
Altaf Hussain, the founder and chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) which was previously known as the Mohajir Qaumi Movement, was born on September 17, 1953 in Karachi. He obtained his early education in Azizabad Karachi where he spent his early years and his youth. Later , Altaf Hussain graduated from the University of Karachi in Pharmacy in 1979. His political career began during his student years in Karachi University when he and Azeem Ahmed Tariq founded the All-Pakistan Mohajir Students Organisation (APMSO) in 1978.
Through this platform, Altaf Hussain started exploiting the lower and lower middle class of Urdu speaking youth (Mohajirs) of Karachi by founding MQM in 1984 and calling it the only party representing the Urdu speaking community (Mohajirs) of Sindh. In the early days of his political activism, Altaf Hussain had demanded a territorial settlement for the Mohajirs. “When everyone else had a province, we the Mohajirs should have one too,” he said in March 1984, referring to the major ethnic groups in Pakistan such as the Sindhis, the Balochs, the Pashtuns and the Punjabis. That demand has attracted many youth of Urdu speaking community.
During the late 1980s MQM activists indulged in ethnic riots with Pathan and Sindhi communities. On the instructions of Altaf Hussain, MQM activists established torture cells and started butchering innocent people. Altaf Hussain established a death squad under him which was aimed to eliminate opponents through targeted killings. They were even trained in training camps run by Indian Intelligence Agency RAW to create unrest in financial capital of Pakistan, i.e., Karachi. Since then MQM toed the line of enemies of Pakistan and began working for them.
In the early 1990s, the government conducted an operation in Karachi. The operation was directed against terrorist and criminal elements in Karachi but MQM alleged that it was aimed against MQM, Karachi was caught in the middle of a war involving law enforcement agencies and political parties. Altaf Hussain’s elder brother Nasir Hussain and nephew Arif Hussain were also killed during this period of violence. The business activities in Karachi remained disturbed.
In 1992 Altaf Hussain went into self-exile to London as cases were registered against him for attacking officials of law enforcing agencies including killing of Major Kalim of Rangers. In London he established contacts with RAW of India and MI6 of Britain. This was substantiated by various defected MQM leaders including Mustafa Kamal. Altaf Hussain started running MQM affairs from London through telephone and thousands of people were forcibly being gathered by MQM activists to give impression that all Mohajir community is fan of Altaf Hussain. He continued to threat anybody through his telephonic addresses. Through his militia gang of criminals and death squad, Altaf Hussain made the entire city of Karachi hostage. In 1997, MQM changed its name from Mohajir Qaumi Movement to Muttahida Qaumi Movement in order to develop from a party representing a single community to one that could play a greater role in national politics. With changed name anti state / criminal activities of MQM continued unabated. On the contrary, Altaf Hussain has alleged that the state and other political parties have targeted MQM and its workers ever since its formation.
On 21 August 2016, Hussain made controversial speech in Karachi Hunger strike camp which was a symbolic protest against alleged extra judicial killings perpetrated by Pakistani Paramilitary forces and selective targeting of MQM workers and office bearers in Karachi operation. Altaf Hussain accused state sponsored terrorism and harboring of terrorist organisations such as TTP and other rogue banned organisations. He chanted ‘Pakistan Murdabad’ to condemn unlawful detention of MQM activits and extra judicial killings by the state agencies. He also deplored Pakistani media’s biased attitude in covering law transgression by Law enforcement agencies. On that speech govt took serious note and banned telecast of Altaf Hussain’s speech in any Pakistani channel. As a result MQM Pakistan was established which marginalized MQM London headed by Altaf Hussain.
Altaf Hussain was alienated due to his negativity and anti-Pakistan role he played on the behest of anti-Pakistan agencies including RAW, MI6 and MOSSAD. He exploited the notion of Mohajirism and used innocent Mohajir youth for his nefarious designs. Now it is high time for youth of Urban Sindh to rise and get liberated from clutches of Altaf Hussain and prove themselves as true patriots.
